IN PRAISE OF PHOTOJOURNALISM, NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT Liba Taylor and Celina Dunlop talk about the journey photographs make from the mind of the photojournalist to the editorial page. It is a tale of ambitious goals tempered by sobering reality, of joys and pitfalls, of capturing the moment that bears witness, informs us, shocks us or makes us smile. LIBA TAYLOR Photographer Czech born, she left Czechoslovakia after the Russian invasion in 1968 to come to the UK, where she lived for 36 years before returning to the Czech Republic. After completing her studies in the UK, she freelanced as a documentary/reportage photographer for a number of British NGOsand various United Nations agencies, including UNHCR, UNICEF, World Health Organization, as well as photographing human interested stories for British magazines. Her work is represented by Corbis, Alamy and Robert Harding. Since her return to the Czech Republic, she has been teaching photography, blogging for National Geographic Czech and is closely involved with the annual Czech Press Photo contest. CELINA DUNLOP Photo Editor, Video Producer: The Economist Newspaper Born in the United Kingdom. Appointed picture editor of The Economist in 1990 with responsibility for photo content in all media. She was a jury member for This Working Life 2007 and Czech Press Photo 2011, 2012. She has served on several panels discussing a variety of UK photo industry issues. From 2000-2006 she tutored the London School of Publishing course in picture research. In 2008 her documentary on the My Lai massacre won Foreign Press Association radio story of the year and BBC best radio journalism. Her online videos for The Economist showcase world-class photojournalism on a wide range of topics including, life behind the Berlin Wall and Afghanistan's child brides. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
