Ecoco! Ice-chan! My friend! At approximately 10 years old, she brings a penguin ally with her wherever she goes. This young lady clad in a penguin getup was originally created as a mascot character for Tohoku Electric Power Company (for Eco Ice) and became renowned for her cuteness, but as the company wasn't sure that this was the image they wanted to continue projecting, she saw limited use and was eventually phased out. However, she had a popularity boom in the early 2000s which led to her being incorporated into a variety of independent works. She was designed by the manga artist, Yoshitomo Watanabe, who is most famous for "Sono Muko no Mukogawa", "CARAT!", some works affiliated with Koei's "Angelique" series and "Ecoco" (and "Klonoa" is their favorite game... good tastes). "Ecoco de Fight!" is a quality Doujin platforming adventure originally developed by CClub-Flying (aka CClub Flying Column Party / CCLUB別働隊 / CClub Betsudoutai) in 1999 that saw numerous updates until it was finally "complete" in 2003. The game is quite popular among Doujin enthusiasts with particular popularity in Korea where the game was leaked and distributed frequently and even made its way on the PCs of various schools around the country. A unique (but underutilized) characteristic of CClub's titles is that they were also developed simultaneously for Japanese "Pocket PCs", and the team would go on to develop their own mascot characters (desktop mascots). The final version, "Ecoco de Fight! with Usada Patch" (えここ de ふぁいと！with うさだぱっち) is showcased here and was recently purchased for almost 10,000 yen. It is their first major video game work before Nanikura (なにクラ). In the game, Ecoco is living peacefully in Penguin Village with her pals when they notice a weird flying saucer in the sky. As Ecoco goes to investigate, she encounters a strange catgirl who has beef with her... but she doesn't understand why initially, she only knows that she's hostile and abducts her friends! As it turns out, this catgirl is "Dejiko", another mascot character for "Broccoli", a Japanese media company that publishes manga, anime, video games and trading card games (her own franchise being "Di Gi Charat") and employee for "Gamers", a Japanese retail store. Posing as a potential "rival" in the cute mascot field, she gets the aid of Puchiko and Rabi-en-Rose as well (but Puchiko thinks its wrong and rebels and Usada decides not to take an active role, only showing in the very end of Puchiko's Story Mode) to stop Ecoco, but she is determined to get her friends back. Worth noting, "Rabi-en-Rose" is her codename, but her real name is Usada Hikaru, a pun of Utada Hikaru (who is most famous for her collaborations with Square Enix and Disney on the "Kingdom Hearts" series). The game is not overly complex, but manages what it does quite well. At first, the player has access to Game Mode A, Game Mode B and Story Mode. Game Mode A/B present you with 20 stages each that exercise your ability to defeat enemies and properly platform and are designed to prepare you for the Story Mode. In Story Mode, which is the meat and potatoes of the game, the player advances through 20+ stages while facing the occasional boss battle and larger levels than the other modes. That means the player gets to enjoy 60+ levels overall. Ecoco can use her penguins to freeze enemies who can then be grabbed and tossed into enemies to rack up hits with chains of 2+ hits multiple times in succession triggering "combos" for even more points. There isn't anything in the way of power-ups (although Ecoco starts out slightly handicapped until you defeat the first boss) but each level introduces different gimmicks from switches to indestructible enemies to fireballs you can freeze to moving platforms, etc. After clearing Story Mode, you unlock "Puchiko de Fight!" which is an omake mode with Puchiko and an altered plot (her mode is intended to be slightly more difficult as she only has one helper). This mode also introduces a 3-Minute and 5-Minute Score Attack Mode with a gauntlet of foes designed for easier combos and allows you to play with Dejiko and Usada (in specific modes only). The game feels like a lost 16-bit gem with an emphasis on speedruns and score chasing, with simplicity akin to revered gems like "The Adventure of Little Ralph". The visuals are vibrant and the soundtrack is upbeat and even "hardcore" in a few instances (such as the last world and boss battles). It's not especially difficult, but the platforming can get tricky. Overall, I enjoyed it and showcase every mode and character (except Game Mode B).
