The Krishna Butter Ball is known as Vaanirai Kal to local people. In Tamil language, the original language of the land, it means "Stone of The Sky God". According to one explanation, it was the gods who placed this rock to show their power. A more modern explanation substitutes the gods with aliens who visited the area thousands of years ago. Krishna Butterball is a gigantic granite rock in Mahabalipuram, Chennai, India. Mahabalipuram is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rock is estimated to weigh over 250 tons, measures about 19.6 ft. in height and 16.4 ft. in diameter. The rock has been sitting on a 45-degree slippery slope in Mahabalipuram for over 1,300 years, looking like it's going to roll at any moment, seemingly defying all laws of physics. As the giant rock looked like a dollop of butter that the god had dropped, the name Krishna Butter Ball was invented in 1969 by a tour guide while showing Mahabalipuram to Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India that time. The Pallava king Narasimhavarman, who ruled southern India from 630 to 668AD, attempt to dislodge the rock, the mission was unsuccessful. 1908 the Governor of Madras (Arthur Lawley) feared for the safety of the people and houses at the base of the hill. So, as per his order seven elephants were used to push the rock. But the rock did not move at all. An elephant can push or pull 6 tons. The rock sitting on a 4 feet slippery base at an 45 degree angle did not move with a pushing power of 42 tons (7 elephants). The hill is about 30 feet high, which wasa very tall mountain 1300 years ago. Because the land here keeps rising and the hill is slowly being buried at the rate of a foot a year. How was this giant rock placed on such a high altitude? #krishnabutterball #balancingrock #250tonrock
