44,000lb Steel Coil Broke This Trailer While Driving! Thank goodness there were no injuries, as these massive huge steel coils are no joke. If the chains were to snap, momentum would take this until it caused catastrophic damage. I've seen similar jobs where the coils break free and land inside the tractor itself! Alex arrived on scene in Big Flipper, our 75ton rotator, to fix this mess. The company had a second trailer so the job was a straight lift and set. The rigging was a bit tricky, since using chain could damage the coil itself. Not wanting to cause further damage, Alex opted to use all synthetic rigging from Bailey's Tow Accessories. With some extra protection from wear pads and Bailey's sleeves, the coil was rigged and lifted in no time. Once in the air, the broken trailer pulled forward and the second trailer backed up underneath. The second hard part was trying to get the coil spun 90 degrees. With limited boom height, doing this by hand was not possible. Alex had the idea to use his deck winch to force it sideways, allowing it to be perfectly placed on the customer's bed.
