One of Sergei Rachmaninoff's (1873-1943) masterpieces. This prelude was composed in 1892 as part of a collection of 5 works for piano, Morceaux de Fantaisie (opus 3). At the time, Rachmaninoff was 19 years old and had just graduated from the Moscow Conservatory. The second prelude would become one of his most famous works, but since the Russian publishers did not pay royalties at the time, his profit was a publishing fee the equivalent of roughly two months salary...
