Rescues at the Walvis Bay docks usually follow a pattern: most seals are fast asleep after gorging on fish scraps, and it is possible to get close. But not this one. This big bull seal was wide awake, alert, and far too curious. He kept sniffing Antoine’s rescue hook, but never close enough for a clean cut. The plastic packing strap around his neck was tight and dangerous. Just as things seemed to stall, Naudé jumps in with the net.
