Filmed: Vice Rudan, Makarska Riviera Beaches © Brela Tourist Board 2021. The “French Road”, also known as „Napoleon`s road“, is an exceptional contribution to road engineering in the early 19th century (1811.) The road was built on the steep slope of mountain Biokovo, between 357.41 and 443.73 metres above the sea level. It was never completed, and so it is possible to reconstruct all the phases of its construction. Nowhere else among the surviving examples of French roads in Dalmatia is it possible so well to understand the building technology, the routing or the phases of construction. The long courses of road surface running high above the terrain are particularly impressive. The roadbed is made of large pieces of stone, with a double layer of gravel of various sizes, and a packed layer of finer granulation on the actual carriageway. The kerbstones are made of large heavy stones roughly dressed on the upper surface. It was designed by Frano Zavoreo, ingeneieur de grand mèrite, who ably devised the route and organised the works, according to the best standards of modern road building. The French authorities obliged the population to participate in public works without pay. Marshal Marmont speaks of the rations that the peasants got. The peasants often had to work for hard tack alone, without any payment, themselves and their horses and carts, up to four days a week.
