His plan is set: once he achieves success, his beloved will follow, setting the stage for their marriage. Driven by a zest for progress, his journey is marked by a series of intriguing and adventurous escapades. In the year 1922, Harold, a lad from the countryside, bids farewell to his mother and his sweetheart Mildred at the train station, leaving behind the comforts of Great Bend for the promises of the city. With high hopes and a pledge to Mildred to wed her once he finds his footing, Harold embarks on his urban adventure. He shares modest lodgings with his pal 'Limpy' Bill and secures a position as a salesman at the De Vore Department Store. In a twist of ambition, Harold pawns Bill's phonograph, acquires a lavaliere, and misleads Mildred through letters, claiming he's risen to a managerial role at De Vore. Fate plays its hand when Harold stumbles upon a former Great Bend acquaintance, now a policeman. In a playful scheme, he urges Bill to topple the officer onto him. The plan backfires, leading to a wild chase, with Harold scaling a building to evade capture. Meanwhile, Mildred, urged by her mother, decides to surprise Harold, who then masquerades as De Vore's manager. Overhearing the general manager's offer of a thousand-dollar reward for anyone who can drum up publicity for the store, Harold proposes to Bill a daredevil climb of the Bolton Building for half the prize.
