Why did I talk myself into that? It's a question, men (and even kings) have been asking themselves for thousands of years. Left to ourselves, a man can talk himself into just about anything. A decision to compromise involves choice. Gears move in our mind and options are weighed. Desire trumps what we know is right. This happens when we believe that right or wrong, the thing that we want is what will make us happy …and we’ll get away with it. We get the “rules” and they are good rules for the masses and for the average man, but we aren’t average. We can manage the compromise, out-run the ripple and everything will be just fine. Really... • So, what happened with Solomon? He was doing so good! An incredible success, fulfilled calling, testimony, respect, wisdom, riches, and power. In the first 10 chapters of 1 Kings, the first 50 years of his life, Solomon had it all going on. And then in chapter 11 we get the report of a compromise. • What was he thinking? King Solomon was no dummy. If he was with us at One Thing on Men, he could tell us exactly what he was thinking. In fact, in 1 Kings 11, King Solomon does tell us. • So, why did Solomon compromise? • Why do we compromise? And why do we sometimes talk ourselves into doing things that are opposite of what God instructs? Something we examine in this message, because it is a matter of the heart. This week we continue with our series on “The Life and Lessons of King Solomon,” by examining why King Solomon didn’t finish well. What can we learn about compromise the compromises Solomon made and the condition of his heart with regard to being fully devoted to God. Important lessons to learn with eternal consequences for you and me.
