J-Bay Cancelled | A Blow to South African Surfing The J-Bay Corona Open has been cancelled. Lost. Not happening. However you look at it, this is a massive blow to South African surfing culture—and especially to the J-Bay community. It’s difficult not to place the loss of such a major international surfing event at the feet of our government. Not emotionally, but based purely on performance. Incompetence, poor execution, and a constant deflection of responsibility have once again cost us something special. If you can’t run systems efficiently, you can’t host world-class events. It’s that simple. The impact on the local community is huge. This mid-winter window is a vital economic boost, keeping many small businesses afloat through the annual cycle. Accommodation, restaurants, surf shops, filmers, contractors—this event feeds an entire ecosystem that relies on the influx of surfers, fans, and global attention. J-Bay is a surfing town in the truest sense. Surfing isn’t a hobby here—it’s a way of life. Swell forecasts shape schedules. When a proper swell hits, everyone understands that work slows down. Builders, electricians, shop owners—we all steal a few hours to do what we love and why we choose to live here: the waves. Hopefully this raw, honest POV, walk through look at the J-Bay Corona Open gives you a sense of what we experience firsthand when the WSL comes to town. We love it. We live for it. And we genuinely hope that next year sees the return of this iconic event to the World Surf League calendar, where it belongs. In the meantime, here’s hoping Raglan in New Zealand scores some great waves and gets to experience a similar energy. It looks like a solid setup for spectators and a genuine boost for their local surfing community. Till next time.
