My first sound art project. For 'Self Storage', an exhibition curated by Brian Eno and Laurie Anderson for the RCA. Located in Acorn Self Storage facility in Wembley, April 1995. Organised by Artangel. I posted a sound activated tape recorder overnight via Recorded Delivery service through the Royal Mail in London on 28th March 1995, It caught all the noises of the journey, including hot blooded postmen workers at dawn scanning the parcels, a juvenile delight to discover when I first played it back the the RCA architecture studio the following morning. i discovered in the interview for the exhibition, having already pitched my proposal, that by complete magical serendipity, Brian's family had been postmen, and i think he also said he had had a go at it early on. "Janek Schaefer's first sound-work, Recorded Delivery, remains one of the wittiest and most interesting in the field of Sound-Art. It is elegant, economical and clever, and makes me wish I'd thought of it first." (Brian Eno 2005) it's where it all began for me.
