On a couple recent trips down south of Seattle, I have been able to get footage of trains traversing the seldomly filmed Union Pacific Seattle Subdivision. The UP Seattle Sub is former Milwaukee Road trackage, and runs from Reservation Jct in Tacoma to Black River Jct in Tukwila. The route would appear to be a branchline just based on the general look, equipment, and overall traffic levels but it is indeed a mainline. The first trip to the Seattle Sub yielded two I-G4SE trains. I-G4SE runs between the Global IV intermodal terminal in Joliet, IL and Seattle. Normally there's only about one a day, but that day there were two. The second trip had greater variety. We caught an O-GLSE, an empty garbage train heading back to Seattle. UP runs these trains on a loop between Seattle an a Waste Management facility just south of Arlington, OR in Gilliam County. These trains are a daily occurrence on the Seattle Sub with SEGL leaving Seattle in the evening and GLSE showing up whenever. The next train we caught was LIS41, one of the three locals on the Seattle Sub. LIS41 is based out of a small yard in Kent, serving industries in Kent and Tukwila usually in the late morning to early afternoon. LIS49 is the other daytime local, running out of the small yard in Kent to Fife usually in the late afternoon to evening and back to Kent. LIS48 is the third local, but is never shot because it always runs in the middle of the night. This train goes from Fife Yard to UP's Argo Yard in Seattle, and back. The last train showcased is UP's I-SEBR intermodal. This train is a daily run usually departing Seattle in the early morning to Brooklyn Yard in the Portland area. There are a couple other trains not showcased in this video. UP also runs an intermodal train between Barnes Yard in Portland to Harbor Island in Seattle symbolled I-BAHI about once a week. This train can also run as I-BASE. To round out the traffic are as needed grain trains which run to Seattle. Aside from the traffic, the UP Seattle Sub is also interesting because of it's numerous M Bells, 6 of which are featured in this video. Most of the M-Bells on the line are in Puyallup, but 44th St. in Kent also has a pair. While being insignificant next to the much much busier BNSF Seattle Sub, to catch action on the lesser line feels somewhat more rewarding and a bit more fun. If you happen to attempt to catch action on this line, a scanner is greatly recommended, as train will call UP dispatch providing great heads up for movements on the sub. There's also a Defect Detector at Kent that can also be used to provide heads up. Anyways, Enjoy!
