44 years ago, Dorothy "Dottie" Silzel was raped and murdered in her Kent, Washington condominium. The case went cold. No arrests. No justice. Just a grieving family left with unanswered questions for over four decades. Then forensic genealogy changed everything. In 2022, forensic genealogist Misty Gillis of Identifinders International uploaded Dorothy's DNA profile to GEDmatch and identified 11 potential suspects. One name kept rising to the top: Kenneth Duane Kundert — a man whose brother lived just 1,200 feet from Dorothy's front door in 1980. But getting his DNA wasn't easy. Kenneth refused to cooperate. He even pocketed every cigarette butt he smoked to avoid leaving DNA behind. Until March 22nd, 2024. Outside a Walmart in Clinton, Arkansas, Kenneth made one mistake. He dropped one cigarette. Detectives were watching. That single cigarette butt matched DNA preserved from Dorothy's bathrobe since 1980. Kenneth Duane Kundert was arrested on August 20th, 2024 and charged with first-degree murder. Bail was set at $3 million. He pleaded not guilty on November 7th, 2024 before Judge Johanna Bender in King County Superior Court. This is the full story of how one woman's murder was finally solved after 44 years — and how forensic genealogy is revolutionizing cold case investigations across America. Dorothy Silzel mattered.
