Every letterpress print starts with a plan—until the press has other ideas. In this video, we set out to print a new Groundhog Day piece featuring a hand-carved linoleum groundhog paired with metal type reading “Respect the Shadow.” The plan was simple: print the piece on Ms. Kelsey, our 3×5 Kelsey & Company letterpress. But sometimes ink coverage, impression, scale, and pressure don’t line up—and partway through the run, it became clear the print just wasn’t working the way it should. So we did what printers have done forever: we pivoted. we called an audible. The print was ultimately saved—but not on the press we started with. You’ll have to watch to see which press stepped in and finished the job.
