1972 and 1973 were the most violent and brutal years of the Troubles. The Smithfield area in the north of the city centre became a heavy target for the UVF's bombing campaign against Catholic-owned bars, because of its proximity to the loyalist Shankill Road. September 1972 saw such an attack result in fatalities with the deaths of two young Catholic civilians (Packy McGee and James Gillen) and wounding of 17 others in a UVF car bomb attack on Conlon's Bar, Francis Street.
