This is Part 1 of the 3 part series on "The Past-Present-Future of Time in Physics", draws from Prof. Lee Smolin's book "Time Reborn", to describe the history of physics which shows that the essence of "Time" has been removed from physics - culminating in relativity. Part 2 will look in detail on the transition from 19th century physics to Special Relativity. Part 3 shows how to put the essense of "Time" back into physics by, ironically, replacing the human concept of "Time" with an inherently physical, operationally defined physics construct that has all the essence of "Time" EXCEPT that it does NOT have its own dimension and which is currently used in GPS.
