Small, reach-in pantries are always a challenge to organize -- and to keep organized. There is a simple 3-step strategy and the perfect organizing solution to make the most of your small pantry. Let’s dive in! Many small pantries are usually deep to compensate for the limited cabinet space they are given -- and in many cases, a pantry can be up to 2’ deep. If you have high shelves, items get stuck in the back, you lose track of what you have and you may end up buying many of the same items you already have on hand. The lower shelves and drawers that are more accessible also present a problem: they become jam-packed and cluttered if there is no clear category for each drawer or shelf. STEP 1: Take Everything Out This first step to organizing any space is to take everything out! As you remove items from the pantry, start sorting and categorizing into general food type: baking items, jars, cans, cereals, pastas, grains, legumes, chips and snacks. STEP 2: Zone Each Category Once you have a good idea of the size of each category, the next step is to assign shelves and drawers to each category using basic organizing principles such as frequency of use and accessibility for all the members of the household. STEP 3: Install Organizing Solutions & Label Now that categories have been assigned homes in shelves and drawers, you can see what organizing solution will work best for each space. My favorite solution in a pantry like this are deep drawer bins that will keep items contained yet accessible in deep pantry shelves and drawers. You then want to label everything so everyone knows where items are, and more importantly, what shelf, bin or drawer they go back to. The finished result? A gleaming, shining pantry of organization with every shelf, bin and drawer labeled with what you are looking for -- or that snack that you are craving. Bon appetit!
