Having made a successful record of 'Chanson de Nuit' with Elgar conducting, The Gramophone Company wanted Elgar to record its companion piece, 'Chanson de Matin,' to be used as a coupling. An attempt was made with the Royal Albert Hall Orchestra on 28 April 1926, but the resultant recordings were rejected as 'too weak.' The work was programmed again at the end of a long session with the London Symphony Orchestra at Queen's Hall on 1 April 1927, and take 1A was ultimately approved and issued on HMV D 1236. In fact, the recording was not as successful as it could have been. There is a strange form of distortion throughout, which is particularly noticeable in the case of the strings: a serious defect in a work where the strings are so prominent. I initially wondered if the problem was the gritty Sydney solid stock pressing from which I made my transfer. A comparison with the version issued on EMI's 'Elgar on Record' CD set set my mind at rest: the distortion is also present there, but an attempt has been made to deal with it - apparently by chopping off the higher frequencies, which to me only produces a worse sound. Accordingly, here is my own transfer - without heavy filtering - from my Sydney pressing of the original. It is still a delightful record!
