Amazing Indonesia - East Java | Cinematic Travel

This journey is undoubtedly the best one I've ever had in my life! The thrill, the beauty, surreal nature of those places are just unmatched. This 9-day long trip was in two parts. During the first leg of 5 days I visited Bromo, Ijen, and Tumpak Sewu waterfalls and then in the 4-day second leg, I climbed Mahameru, the highest peak of Java. Everything started with my flight to Surabaya, Indonesia from Changi, Singapore. From Surabaya, I directly went to Cemoro Lawang (through Probolinggo) to visit magnificent Bromo. Mount Bromo is one of the most visited active volcanoes in Indonesia. Even though the hike up to the summit was not very challenging, the views are incredible and the whole day starts with the climb up to Mount Penanjakan for the sunrise view of Bromo and then the walk through the sea of sand which is mind-blowing and unreal. From Cemoro Lawang I went to Bondowoso and it was a 12.30am start to climb Mount Ijen. Mount Ijen is where the world-famous blue famous can be found and also where Ijen volcanic crater is located. The hike to reach the summit was challenging and it was totally worth it at the end of it. The views up there are magnificent and it is like nothing I have ever seen before. From Ijen, I directly went to Lumajang. Lumajang is the home to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and also the Goa Tetes cave complex. Going to these two places was not an easy task as we have to climb up and down rocky waterfall and streams using ropes. With no proper protection of cables, every step you take is a gamble with your life. But it is worth it! Not a place for the faint-hearted but the views are absolutely amazing. During the 2nd part of the journey, I had only one intention. That is MAHAMERU! Mahameru (AKA Semeru) is a stratovolcano in Java, Indonesia. It is towering 3676m in altitude and is also the highest peak in the island of Java. After watching the movie called 5cm which shows the tale of 5 friends who climbed Semeru (Mahameru), I always wanted to embark on this adventure. I didn't know when, but I wanted to! I have been practicing hard for a few months now and as the initial step, I wanted to summit Mount Rinjani (3700m+) in Lombok, Indonesia on the 11th of August. But unfortunately, 3 massive earthquakes struck Lombok (magnitude 6.4, 6.9 and 5.8) in three consecutive weeks (29th July, 5th August 2018 and 09th of August) and Rinjani trek was closed down for hikers with immediate effect. My hopes were shattered and I was disappointed. Then I thought maybe I could go 1 step further and do Mahameru itself. Canceled all my flight bookings to Lombok and rebooked flights to Surabaya with one goal that is to climb the holy Mahameru and finally, after an amazing 3-day journey, I was able to summit Mahameru ~ The towering stratovolcano which is also the highest point in the island of Java. Amidst the danger of the volcano which is erupting every 20 minutes, all I can see is pure BEAUTY!
