Thiruvananthapuram: Tension prevailed in Bonacaud after police tried to stop people from visiting Kurisumala, a pilgrimage centre under the Neyyattinkara Diocese. As the believers refused to disperse and started to hurl stones at the police, the police resorted to lathi charge. The crowd destroyed the barricades. Police retaliated by hurling stones and caning the agitators. Several people including police personnel were injured in the stone pelting and lathicharge. The trouble started after a wooden cross erected at Kurisumala was found damaged in November last year. Kurisumala made headlines some months ago after a cross and an altar were found damaged. Following the incidents, visitors were banned from Kurisumala.
