The Hayduke Trail is an 850 mile hike across Utah and Northern Arizona. It is one of the most challenging long distance trails in the United States, and a big part of it goes through Grand Canyon National Park! About 250 miles or so of our route is spent crossing the Grand Canyon nearly three times. That is three Rim to Rim hikes in other words, using a lot of remote trails that are less known. We got our permits for the Grand Canyon in March, when we planned to be there in May. It is imparative that you get these sooner rather than later! The rangers want to help you, they want to work with you, but you need to do some planning on your own first. There is an example itinerary floating around online but I think it sucks! So use my example below as a guide. the funny letters and numbers mentioned below correlate to use zones, you can find a map of GCNP online with these use zones to compare for yourself. You can camp anywhere within these zones from what I understand, but the rangers do like you to specific a specific spot if possible on your permit. Day 1, all of nankoweep & some of Colorado river (ae9) cross in morning and hike to tanner (ba9 or bb9) hance Creek (by horseshoe) (be9) cremation (bj9 or bh9) south rim campground & revise permits if needed AZT camp or do rim to rim (AZT camp only lets 11 per night, and we were told 'hayduke hikers are not azt hikers and thus we are not allowed to camp there') north rim campground 30 mile road walk day if you didn't do r2r (to nj2), or two 15s (nj0&nj2) 12+ through saddle canyon and most of tapeats (av9) camp at fishtail (az9) hike out kanab canyon, done You can revise your permits from Jacob lake before heading into the canyon, and can revise them again once you get to the south rim if you want. We wound up running into three rangers who did care, and one very much so cared about permit. If anything it's better to be a day ahead of schedule than behind as they said it inspired more confidence in them that we did know what we were doing The Hayduke in the Grand Canyon starts on the North Rim just south of Jacob Lake, following the Arizona Trail for a bit, and then descending down into the Canyon on the Nankoweep Trail. You follow the Colorado River, and get a hitch across it from some rafters to the Beamer Trail at the confluence of the Little Colorado River. The Beamer Trail turns into the Escalante Route, which is a bit more challenging, involving some route finding, and scrambling on loose rock, at times you will even do some rock climbing. The Escalante Route meets the Tonto Trail which is significantly easier, and takes you to the South Kaibab Trail and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Temperatures vary greatly from the top of the canyon to the bottom, about a 30 degree difference. So for us, most of our time spent hiking was in 115 degree heat, which feels nearly unbearable.
