Stone carving. Dragonfly on the rocks, rotary carving on Welsh slate rockery.

Pick up a lump of rock and start carving! I had this Welsh slate boulder in my garden and decided to carve a Dragonfly into the top. Carving "end grain" of slate proved to be a challenge but the Ferrex mini grinder rotary Dremel type grinder managed quite well. I have tried to make this a step by step video showing each tool used along the way. There are some truly awesome carvers working on Youtube and Pinterest and I will never be as good as them. But I do think I am improving. Welsh slate is a really good stone for beginners to start carving and if you have a Dremel or Parkside rotary tool it might be well worth trying to carve Welsh slate, just don't attack the end-grain! Picking up a natural slate boulder and buying a rotary tool, perhaps the Parkside cordless, might be the cheapest way to try out this rewarding craft. Incidentally the Ferrex Mini Bench Grinder is almost as cheap as the Parkside and has a bit more power. I have made other videos on this subject of stone carving and I will list them below.
