The buildings house the Musée de l'Armée, the military museum of the Army of France, the Musée des Plans-Reliefs, and the Musée d'Histoire Contemporaine. The 17th - 19th century department's collections are unique in the world, in terms of their diversity and number: simple soldiers' uniforms and luxury items, equipment from many French and foreign regiments, weapons, harnesses, orders and decorations, emblems, historical figurines, musical instruments and small artillery models appear alongside objects that belonged to famous figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte and his marshals. They are echoed by a remarkable set of contemporary paintings of the events. It centres around the old Monarchy with Louis XIV's reign, from he Battle of Rocroi to the Revolution, the Revolution, the first Restoration, the Hundred Days as well as the Franco-German War of 1870. The department devoted to the two World Wars tells the story of the French Army from 1871 to 1945 and that of the two great conflicts of the 20th century with World War I and II. Located at the heart of the Hôtel National des Invalides, the Museum of the Order of the Liberation tells the story of Free France from 1940 to 1945, through portraits of the Companions of the Liberation.
