A personal piece for a lighthouse I've grown very fond of just off the coast in northern California. This magnificent and rather expensive lighthouse, the most costly in the US, was born out of tragedy. July 30, 1865 the steam side-wheeler ship Brother Jonathan struck these rocks after a course correction to fight against the aggressive seas and winds. Of the 244 passengers only 19 survived via lifeboat. This was the deadliest passenger shipwreck at the time. Years prior in 1792 Captain George Vancouver spotted these deadly rocks and dubbed them The Dragon Rocks and named the nearest point of land Saint George Point with hopes that one day the dragon would be slain. The maps weren't updated as these were rather different times and the crew of the Brother Jonathan had no knowledge of the dangers lurking just a few miles from shore. After the wreck a great effort was put forth to secure funding for the lighthouse. A survey of the terrain occurred in 1892 and construction began in 1893. Much of the expense was related to the 1339 well shaped granite blocks from Mad River. After a turbulent and even deadly decade of building, on October 20, 1892 the lamp was illuminated. The lighthouse remains today standing strong on North West Seal Rock and clearly has earned it's name as an incredibly amount of seals seek refuge and enjoy basking in the sun with only high breaking waves and birds to disturb their relaxation. Best watched in a dark room, full screen, in 8K, and on a display that can correctly show 24 fps content. Thanks for watching.
