Bold, bright and buzzing with life - the Golden Penda is a spectacle to behold. Xanthostemon chrysanthus is a beautiful member of the Myrtaceae famiy and is this month’s head‑turner at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. Like many of its Eucalypt relatives, it’s gone all‑in on the dramatic pincushion look. It produces a globe of glowing, golden stamens (mostly the male parts) that make it look as if someone plugged the tree straight into a power socket. In the wild, the Golden Penda grows only in the rainforests of far northern Queensland. But like many Myrtaceae species, it’s under threat from myrtle rust, a fungal disease that arrived in Australia around 2010. Our Science and Horticulture teams are working hard to try and boost the resilience of vulnerable species like this gorgeous plant. Despite its rainforest origins, the Golden Penda makes an excellent garden tree in warm temperate areas. Up north it reaches a lofty 25 metres, but in cities like Sydney it only grows to around 8–12 metres. When it flowers (sometimes twice a year) it doesn’t hold back. The tree becomes smothered in brilliant blossoms that invite bees, lure in rainbow lorikeets, and generally turn your garden into a nature‑lover’s traffic jam. It likes consistent moisture, a thick layer of mulch, and a good helping of organic matter at planting. Once established, it’s surprisingly drought tolerant. There are several cultivars too. In this video, Paul is standing in front of a variegated beauty with yellow‑and‑green foliage and there’s also a charming dwarf species known as Little penda, which delivers that same golden pincushion effect on a compact 1.5‑metre frame.
