Magnetism is a physical phenomenon produced by moving electric charges. It results in forces of attraction or repulsion between objects that have magnetic properties. Key ideas you need at A2 level Magnetic field (B): A region of space where a magnetic force can be experienced. It is represented by field lines, which show the direction a north pole would move. Magnetic flux density (B): A measure of the strength of a magnetic field, measured in tesla (T). Permanent magnets: Made from materials like iron, nickel, or cobalt. They have north and south poles and produce a constant magnetic field. Electromagnets: Magnetic fields produced by electric currents. The field strength depends on the current, number of turns of wire, and presence of an iron core. Forces on moving charges and currents: A charged particle or a current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field experiences a force. This is the basis of electric motors. Right-hand rule / Fleming’s left-hand rule: Used to determine the direction of force, field, or current in magnetic situations.
