SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Joseph Mulango, Red Cross worker "We have no idea how many people were killed in the fighting, but here we are burying two people." 9. Various shots of body being buried STORYLINE: Hundreds of people carrying mattresses and pots and pans nervously returned to their homes in the troubled northeastern Congolese town of Bunia on Sunday, one day after tribal fighting killed at least five people. The fighting erupted on Saturday after hundreds of gunmen from a Lendu tribal faction launched dawn raids in a bid to regain ground lost to the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC) about 10 days ago, and to gain a foothold before an international force that could reach 1,700 troops deploys in Bunia, the capital of unstable Ituri province. The UPC repelled the attack and there was no fighting on Sunday, but the town remained tense and aid workers said looters continued to ransack houses. Congolese Red cross workers buried two of the victims on Sunday. Hundreds of people left UN compounds in the center of Bunia and at the airport, six kilometers (four miles) west of the town, where they fled to escape the fighting. At the same time, dozens of Lendu left their homes in town and headed to the compounds fearing UPC retribution after the Lendu militia's attack. Several dozen French troops arrived at Bunia's airport on Friday to prepare the ground for the force, code-named Artemis, which is deploying under both European Union and UN mandates. Another 170 French air force and Marine Infantry troops arrived at Entebbe airport in neighbouring Uganda Sunday, and 200 more troops are expected in Entebbe on Monday, said Captain Frederic Solano, a spokesman for the French troops. French peacekeepers set up a roadblock in Bunia on Sunday and stopped child UPC soldier, part of the Hema tribe militia. France is providing at least 700 troops to the force that is supposed to reinforce some 750 UN troops deployed in Bunia. Until now, the UN troops' mandate was to protect UN installations and personnel - they could only fire in self defense and have been unable to stem the violence in the region. The international force's mandate is not yet clear, but it will be authorised to shoot to kill if necessary.
