Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is one of the most important and influential laws governing the internet. Enacted in 1996, it provided legal protections that allowed popular online platforms and services we use today to exist and grow. The core part of Section 230 states that "No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider." This means that online platforms that host third-party content like websites, blogs, videos, etc. are not liable for that content the way a newspaper publisher would be liable for content they publish themselves. Without Section 230, platforms would face potential liability for defamatory, offensive, or illegal content posted by their users. Section 230 also says that platforms cannot be held liable for "any action voluntarily taken in good faith to restrict access to or availability of material that the provider or user considers to be obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable."
