Brett Youngerman, MD, MS, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, New York, NY, discusses the limitations of current evidence regarding laser interstitial thermal therapy (laser ablation) in treating epilepsy. For temporal lobe epilepsy, in particular, Dr Youngerman highlights the ongoing prospective SLATE study (Stereotactic Laser Ablation for Temporal Lobe Epilepsy; NCT02844465) aiming to gather data for FDA approval and the necessity of research surrounding longer-term outcomes. Within this, more data is needed regarding neuropsychological outcomes, such as the benefit of lateral temporal neocortex sparing. Additionally, more data is needed to encompass other patient groups and the effects of LIIT as a treatment option.
