"Exploding Stars and New Planets and Black Holes, Oh My! Frontier Research at Lick Observatory" Presentation by Alex Filippenko Tuesday, August 12, 2014 - 7:00pm at Moore Auditorium on the Schoodic Education and Research Center Campus. Alex Filippenko, one of the world's most widely cited astronomers and most popular astronomy speakers, gave a talk playfully entitled, "Exploding Stars and New Planets and Black Holes, Oh My! Frontier Research at Lick Observatory". Alex is an astrophysicist at the University of California at Berkeley, where he has been voted the best professor on campus a record nine times. He has been named national educator of the year, appeared in nearly 100 TV astronomy documentaries, produced five astronomy courses for the the Great Course series and won the Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization. He was the only scientist who was a part of both teams that revealed the accelerating expansion of the universe, a discovery that earned team leaders the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. His talk included the fascinating story of the 126-year-old Lick Observatory in California, the world's first remote mountaintop observatory, whose remarkable record of discovery continues to this day. His talk is co-sponsored by The Schoodic Institute and The Naturalist's Notebook. The Naturalist’s Notebook is a shop and exploratorium in Seal Harbor and Northeast Harbor that takes visitors on a 13.8-billion-year exploration of the universe and has been named a Best of New England travel destination by Yankee Magazine and Best of Maine by Down East. The Schoodic Institute is a 501c3 nonprofit committed to guiding present and future generations to greater understanding and respect for nature by providing research and learning opportunities through its outstanding Acadia National Park setting, unique coastal Maine facilities, and innovative partnership programs.
