The castle consists of two concentric rings(Kurukawa) of fortifications, the Ninomaru Palace, the ruins of the Honmaru Palace, various support buildings and several gardens. The surface area of the castle is 275,000 square meters of which 8,000 square meters(86,000 sq. ft.) is occupied by buildings. Nijo Castle is perhaps the starkest representation of the power the shogun, or warlords, once held over the Emperor during the Edo period (1603-1867). It is one of the best-known castles in Japan, due to its historical importance, prominence and the city, and UNESCO World Heritage status. Nijo Castle known as the Kyoto residence of the famous leader Tokugawa Ieyasu (the first shogun of the Edo Period). Nijo Castle is a stronghold that represents the prestige and power of the mighty leader known as the unifier of Japan. Construction of the castle was begun in 1601 and finished 25 years later by Ieyasu's grandson Iemitsu. In 1939, the castle was donated to the city of Kyoto and was officially opened to the public. It was the home of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first in a line of powerful Tokugawa shogun that ruled the country for over 200 years. The grounds house a renowned Japanese landscape garden, the Ninomaru Japanese Garden. Enjoy exploring and learning about Ieyasu's dramatic and interesting life - no one said history had to be boring! With hundreds of varieties of flora as well, Nijo Castle is also a great place to view some of Japan's treasured seasonal beauty.
