This discussion addressed the significance of gender issues in the development and deployment of military artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The event provided an opportunity to present findings from UNIDIR research about gender bias in data collection, algorithms, and computer processing and their implications for AI military systems. Panellists reflected on the challenges associated with AI systems’ development and deployment in specific contexts. Drawing on various human rights and gender equality frameworks, as well as the ongoing multilateral process on LAWS, panellists also considered possible avenues for countering AI bias and mitigating harm. The discussion sought to chart a path for technology development that promotes — rather than hinders — gender equity and contributes to gender mainstreaming in the military. 📘 Read our full report on gender and military AI at: https://unidir.org/ai-gender PROGRAMME • Welcoming Remarks by Dr. Cécile Aptel, Deputy Director, UNIDIR • Opening Remarks by Ambassador Tine Mørch Smith, Permanent Representative of Norway to the UN in Geneva. • Dr. Kate Chandler, Georgetown University / UNIDIR. • Abhishek Gupta, Founder and Principal Researcher, Montreal AI Ethics Institute. • Dr. Jane Pinelis, Chief of Test and Evaluation, DoD Joint Artificial Intelligence Center. • Nanjira Sambuli, Fellow, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. • Damini Satija, Independent expert on digital rights, data/AI ethics, and tech policy. • Moderated by Dr. Renata H.
