A Black man is speaking out publicly for the first time since allegedly being beaten by a flashlight-wielding white Louisiana State Trooper last year, in the wake of the officer’s arrest for assault. Standing on the steps of the state capitol, Aaron Bowman, 45, said Tuesday that Trooper Jacob Brown, 30, battered him with a flashlight 18 times in 24 seconds, The Associated Press reported. Brown was arrested last Thursday, turning himself in to face charges of aggravated second-degree battery and malfeasance in office, the state troopers office said in a statement last week. While Bowman’s lawyers were glad that Brown had been arrested, they noted that it was disappointing that didn’t happen until 19 months later, once Bowman had filed a civil-rights lawsuit, they said. Bowman is suing state police and multiple Ouachita Parish agencies. His attorneys on Monday called on officials to release the body camera footage and to immediately fire Brown. Bowman’s lawyers allege that the officer also tried to hide some of the most incriminating parts of the video. “Release the tapes,” attorney Ron Haley said, according to AP. “Do not hide behind the fact that it’s an open investigation. Show what they did. Show why it was so bad that he had to hide it for 19 months.” Santa stimulus? He later told authorities he saw lights and heard sirens but “was scared to pull over,” The Advocate said. According to Brown’s arrest warrant, the flashlight was equipped with a special tip designed to break automobile safety glass, The Monroe News-Star reported. “Every time I got ready to speak, he would hit me with the flashlight,” Bowman recounted at a press conference, according to WAFB-TV. His attorneys said he suffered broken ribs, a head laceration and a broken arm. “It tears me down when I talk about it,” Bowman said, according to WAFB. “It’s like I’m reliving that moment again, you know, and I still have sharp pains in my head from that.” With News Wire Services Recommended on Daily News
