MORE: https://abc6onyourside.com/news/local... The federal government is moving to ban a product they claim is targeting children and linked to addiction. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a report highlighting the harmful effects of 7-OH, a concentrated byproduct of the kratom plant. In February, ABC6 Investigates looked into the death of Columbus man Johnny Loring, who died last year. His mother contacted ABC6 On You Side to say Loring used the herbal supplement kratom regularly and his use caused his death. Loring's autopsy report noted a high lethal dose of Mitragynine in Loring's system, which is a component of Kratom. The report stated that mixed with a toxic level of the pain medication Gabapentin caused Loring's death. Kratom advocates in Ohio praise its benefits in its pure form; however, many have called for a ban on altered, concentrated, and synthetic forms, such as 7-OH. The FDA distinguishes between 7-OH and the natural kratom plant leaf, citing concerns over 7-OH's potential for abuse due to its ability to bind to opioid receptors. The availability of 7-OH products, now found online, in corner stores, and vape shops, is a growing concern. These products often come in the form of fruit-flavored gummies and ice cream cones, marketed as kratom. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Secretary of Health and Human Services, said Tuesday, "They're putting them around schools. They're putting them in our poorest neighborhoods. Now, they're putting them in every gas station. They're marketed for children. There are gummy bears. They're bright colored. They're candy flavored. This is really a sinister, sinister industry." This week, the FDA is issuing a letter to healthcare professionals regarding its findings on 7-OH. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is reviewing the recommendation for a ban and will take public comments before making a final decision. #7OHBan #KratomWarning #FDAAlert #DrugAddiction #PublicHealth #OpioidCrisis #ChildrensHealth #DrugRegulation #OhioNews #Kratom _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: WSYX on Facebook: / wsyxabc6 WSYX on Twitter: / wsyx6 WSYX on Instagram: / wsyx6 Subscribe to WSYX on YouTube: / @wsyxabc6 Daily News Playlist: • 6 On Your Side For more information, visit https://abc6onyourside.com/ Have a news tip?
