Daniel and I travelled directly from our spotting trip of Ramstein Flag 2025 at Eindhoven, to Ramstein Air Base in Germany, so we could have a full day of spotting there from early morning till late at night. We stayed at a hotel next to Ramstein AB and were greeted by a view out of our hotel windows, of a sunny and blue sky. There was every indication to show that our day of spotting at the Air Base would be a nice one! But looks can often be deceiving, as they were on Wednesday the 2nd of April 2025. Although the weather LOOKED stunning, we were instantly blown-away by strong winds the second we set foot onto the field where we would be spotting from. Although the conditions made it incredibly hard to create steady shots, the wind also made it a huge challenge for pilots to land their aircraft, resulting into go-around galore, kicking aircraft left, right and center upon final approach. In this video you can see aircraft like the Lockheed Martin AC-130J Spooky Gunship, C-130J, C-5 Galaxy, Boeing C-17A Globemaster, 747-400F Freighters and much more! We hope you enjoy the footage! RAMSTEIN SPOTTING TIPS: You are absolutely allowed to go to Ramstein AB, and photograph or record aircraft, but you better be ready to be constantly hassled by US Sheriffs and Police, USAF Base Guards, German Polizei and the occasional beanie wearing neck-beard who works for the local council. Daniel and I talked to all of them (beside the beanie dude, he was a right prick) and asked the guards and police/polizei officers what we can and can't do, and what our rights are. So here's a short guide to spotting at Ramstein AB. First of all, you must know that Ramstein AB is American! That base is not located in Germany, but actually is American soil. This soil reaches 2 meters beyond the base fences. This means that US Federal law applies on the base, and 2 meters around the base beyond the fence. Everything around the base is German soil and fair game, however, the roads around the base are privately owned by the Americans. This does mean that, although US Sheriffs and Police don't have jurisdiction outside the base, they are definitely allowed to force your vehicle away from these roads. (This information was provided to us by a very friendly local Polizei officer during a civil chat). US officials however, are not allowed to force you away from outside the base, as this is German soil. So as long as your vehicle is not on one of these private roads (which is any road that has a direct connection to the base or base facilities) or on US soil, they simply have zero jurisdiction. This even means that you don't have to ID yourself, should they ask for it (which they will, A LOT). But, this is where the Polizei comes in. Because the US officials WILL call the German Polizei, who then will have jurisdiction to check your ID. And again, they will ask for your ID! So you better keep that thing within hands-reach, as you'll need to present it a lot. As long as you are a role model citizen, you have nothing to worry about. If you do have a criminal record, you might want to be weary around Ramstein because once you get checked, you better be sure that they do a thorough background check on you. So if you get checked by Polizei, or anyone for that matter, and nothing weird pops up from your ID check, then the only thing that they can still do is check your camera. You see, you are allowed to photograph aircraft in the air at Ramstein, this is not a problem. What you are NOT allowed to do, is to photograph or record the base itself! And this is according to German law! (§109g of the German Criminal Code (Strafgesetzbuch) prohibits unauthorized photography of military facilities that are important for national defense.) and it also applies to a US base such as Ramstein. Thus, if US officials have any suspicion that you were photographing or recording the base itself, Polizei will check your camera footage. If any base footage is found, your camera memory card will be confiscated and you will be ordered to leave. So always keep an empty memory card with you, which you can quickly swap, should you get checked And that is all you need to know! So, long story short: Ramstein AB is American soil Stay at least 2 meters clear of the fence Make sure that you have a valid ID or Passport with you and within hands-reach. You will need it! US officials don't have jurisdiction outside the base, but German onces obviously do. So there is no use to not obey US officials, as they will just call Polizei. You are allowed to photograph and record aircraft in the sky, just not the base itself. And that is by German law. (So make sure to bring an empty memory card, should you get checked). Don't park your car on, or directly next to base roads. You will get ordered to leave. Happy spotting!
