Metropolitan opera stars Louis Quilico and Aprile Millo collaborating with acclaimed concert pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico. https://www.aprilemillo.org/ www.louisquilico.com www.christinapetrowskaquilico.com Soirée d'opera was a sold-out concert at Place des Arts, Montreal. This is an archival recording which is a piece of history for Montreal opera lovers. Both singers are Verdi masters. Here are excerpts from reviews following the concert. “Mme Millo révela un sens absolu du theatre. La voix était belle, comme elle l’est au disque. On admira, dans la grande scène finale d’Otello, le contröle de l’émotion plutöt que de la voix. Louis Quilico possède métier et presence. Notre “Maurice Richard de l’opera”. Christina Quilico (Mme. Quilico) fit des prodiges au piano accompaniment.” Claude Gingras, La Presse The Governor General Announces announced the appointment of Christina Petrowska Quilico, C.M.,OOnt, FRSC Toronto, Ontario “For her celebrated career as a classical and contemporary pianist, and for championing Canadian music.” The Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest civilian honours. “On Friday evening, Salle Wilfrid Pelletier was packed for a joint appearance by soprano Aprile Millo and baritone Louis Quilico, two artists well known for their aptitude for the music of Verdi. Quilico made clear that in his 70th year the baritone still owned a voice of great magnitude, range and even brilliance. Millo, is blessed with a lustrous instrument. Quilico, having established his Verdian authority in Eri tu from Un Ballo in Maschera, gave a strong and sympathetic excerpt from Giordano’s Andrea Chenier, a resolute Credo from Verdi’s Otello and an impressive Cortigiani from Rigoletto. Rusalka’s apostrophe to the moon from Dvorak’s opera found Millo in soft and lyric voice, as did the Willow Song from Verdi’s Otello – a solemn, captivating performance of dinely-spun pianissimos that brought the house down. Pianist Christina Petrowska, Quilico’s wife provided a nicely coloured accompaniment. The duet from Act IV, Scene I of Verdi’s Il Trovatore, vividly acted as well as sung, brought the formal program to a thrilling conclusion.” Arthur Kaptainis, The Montreal Gazette.
