The Malatesta Temple, usually referred to as the Cathedral, has been a cathedral since 1809 with the title of Santa Colomba. Completely renovated under the rule of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, with the contribution of artists such as Leon Battista Alberti, Matteo de' Pasti, Agostino di Duccio and Piero della Francesca, it is, although incomplete, the key work of the Rimini Renaissance and one of the most significant architectures of the Italian Quattrocento in general. Inside the Temple are preserved the crucifix by Giotto (dated around 1300) and a wonderful painting by Piero della Francesca (1451) which portrays Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta kneeling before Saint Sigismondo, with the features of Sigismondo, Emperor of Luxembourg who in 1433, returning from Rome, stopped in Rimini to knight Malatesta. The construction, both inside and outside, appears clearly unfinished: the interruption of the works, around 1460-61, was caused by the disputes between the pontiff Pius II (Piccolomini) and Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, which ended with the excommunication of the latter in 1460, and the loss of a large part of the territories of the Papal State, between Romagna and Marche, under his direct control. During the Second World War it suffered extensive damage, particularly to the roof and the apse area, while the Renaissance chapels commissioned by Malatesta were preserved intact. In the adjacent chapel to the left of the apse, also rebuilt, the only evidence of the original Franciscan dedication of the church: a canvas with Saint Francis receiving the stigmata, painted in 1548 by Giorgio Vasari for the apse. The remaining six chapels are from the fifteenth century; they are characterised by high and protruding marble balustrades, Gothic arches and windows, marble coverings, bas-reliefs and statues. All the sculptures of the Temple are to be attributed to the Florentine Agostino di Duccio, who with his workers worked there for a decade, at least until 1456.
