Live performance Kleine Zaal, Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam, March 2nd, 2014 choir: The Gents conductor: Peter Dijkstra "It Is so Peaceful here Now" won first prize in the Svanholm Singers Composition Award 2012 ==================================== It is so peaceful here now, as if we never were. As if we never saw and never shut our eyes. As if we never woke and never went to sleep. As if we never fell, immersed into darkness. The world had never witnessed a greater dethronement. How strange it was to return. As we saw the desolate land we said: "We who were living are now dead." And from nowhere and everywhere we heard a murmur of lamentation: "Go and stain the earth with grief, with grief alone". We started to walk along the sandy road and we left no footprints. We crossed the dead mountains and heard no echoes from our voices. We strayed over endless plains and cracked earth, and we left no traces. "Who calls to mind our summers and our youth?" we asked. "Who sings a song that tells about our fate?" But there was only a soft rustle of air and ashes. The desert wind made commemoration of us with its dry psalm, sweeping our dust from hill to hill. We chased it but could no longer run. We touched it but could no longer grasp. And we cried a tearless cry that could no longer be heard. As we stood there in sorrow, we once again heard the words: "Go and stain the earth with grief, with grief alone." And so again we started to go, and we stained the earth with grief, with grief alone. Wherever we came, sighs ascended from the burned ground. Sighs of relief, as if a heavy burden had been taken away. It is so peaceful here now, as if we never were. (Text by the composer)
