Windsor Bridge swamped by rising flood waters

The Windsor Bridge - which was designed to be flood proof - has been swallowed by the Hawksbury River’s rising water levels just months after it was opened. Thousands of homes are under threat in Western Sydney as the region sees its fifth day of torrential rain – bringing the worst flooding seen in the area since 1961. The river is expected to hit a new peak within hours as evacuation warnings were issued for places such as Wetherill Park, Londonderry, Clarendon and Colo River. The area saw about 40 millimetres of rain fall in the past 24 hours and could potentially see another 70 millimetres. Emergency services received 1,390 calls for assistance in the past 24 hours, with 18,000 people also evacuated from their homes and more than 190 schools currently closed. The torrential rain, however, was only been forecasted for about another 24 hours.
