I started wrestling in 1991 when I was 11 years old. I sustained numerous injuries later in my wrestling career and ultimately had to retire from competition when I was wrestling D1 at Sacred Heart University. That was one of the hardest decisions of my life. I started coaching wrestling right after my competitive career ended and it took years and years before I could wrestle hard with the injuries I had sustained. 5 years ago I started BJJ, but my school did zero stand up training. I started coaching the guys who wanted help on their stand up, because they wanted to get better on their feet. I was approached by one of the Judo coaches at Eastern Michigan University about training over there, as they say my YouTube and were interested in having me train. I was only a few months into training when I blew out my knee and needed an ACL reconstruction and bilateral meniscus repair. I got the itch to compete again whilst recovering from the injury and rehabilitated my knee back. This is my first tournament, which was the State Qualifier. I did well, but I have a lot to learn still. That is the fun part. I love learning from the excellent coaches we have at the University and look forward to competing and getting as good as I can at various forms of grappling. Thank you for your continued support. Just so you know, people often wear a white Gi and just switch out the belt color from white to blue for scoring purposes. Blackbelts do it all the time. It is easier than switching out your Gi. I actually almost missed my first match because I wasn’t ready in time, so I decided to keep my white Gi on and carry a white and blue belt with me. “Music by Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio”
