Mid of police and water cannon truck STORYLINE Massive anti-government protests in downtown La Paz, Bolivia, brought parts of the city to a virtual standstill for several hours on Tuesday. Thousands of doctors, medical students and miners are calling for salary increases greater than the seven percent proposed by the government of President Evo Morales. The Bolivian Worker''s Union, known by its Spanish initials, COB, has called for two days of strikes to demonstrate against poor working conditions and low pay. Doctors in state-run hospitals have recently seen their working hours increase from six hours a day to eight hours a day. On Tuesday, medical staff staged a large protest outside Bolivia''s Ministry of Health, asking to be included in a workers'' law that would allow them to claim benefits to which they are not presently entitled. Police responded to the protest with tear gas and water cannons. By midday, calm had returned to the area and no arrests or major injuries were reported. The COB vowed to return on Wednesday and continue protesting. Recent polls show that President Morales'' approval rating has been on a downward spiral for the past year and is currently hovering at around 40 percent.
