After the German occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1938 and of Poland in 1939, many skilled pilots fled from these conquered nations to France and Great Britain. These aces in exile were instrumental in supplementing the dwindling numbers of fighter pilots available to defend the island during the battle of Britain. Though too late to save France, these foreign fighters formed themselves into independent squadrons loyal to the royal air force rather than to their governments in exile and flew alongside British pilots. One of the most famous of these is 303 squadron, a Polish squadron that achieved the highest kill count of any squadron during the battle of Britain thanks to their combat experience fighting in Poland.
