It is sunday evening (my time) and why not enjoy the fading day with another landing in our most-beloved Airbus A340-600?! ;-) This time, I am inviting you to join us on the flight deck for an approach and landing at Shanghai Pudong International Airport which is quite rare - at least for me. We do not have that many flights to China on the airbus fleet and colleagues like to travel there, so it is not easy to get that rotation. But that time, I was lucky and excited to travel there again - it has been nine years since the last time...! Our routing lead us via Beijing and later the approach started in the north-west at point SASAN. We were cleared for the SASAN 81A RNAV arrival for an ILS approach to runway 17R. The weather was nice, not too much wind but warm (25 degrees C in the morning already) and we have had a good view of the city, coming over the Bund and Pearl Tower. The approach controller vectored us on a steep and direct approach to the final and is was quite a challenge to reach all the cleared altitudes in time in order to be established on final approach on speed and in landing configuration. Very nice and professional vectoring by the controllers, though and it was nice to work with the -600! By the way: did you know that in chinese airspace, we are using altitudes in meters and not in feet? ;-) That always is an additional challenge as our altimeters still show feet, so we have to convert the given metric clearances in feet.
