Student practising the Katana Presentation Kata followed by the 8 Cuts Kata. The 2nd Dan Katana Kata within the Seishin Ju-Jitsu syllabus is a powerful demonstration of precision, control and traditional weapon awareness. Under the guidance of Sensei John Michelle, students at 2nd Dan level are expected to display not only technical accuracy, but also true martial presence, focus and understanding of the blade. The kata begins with the Presentation — a formal and disciplined introduction to the katana. This is far more than simply drawing a sword. It represents respect for the weapon, awareness of surroundings, and mental readiness. The practitioner demonstrates correct stance, posture and grip, ensuring the blade is aligned and controlled at all times. Every movement is deliberate. The eyes remain calm yet alert, reflecting zanshin — continued awareness before, during and after technique. The Presentation sets the tone, showing composure and authority appropriate to a senior Dan grade. Following this comes the Eight Cuts (Happo-Giri) — a structured sequence of strikes delivered with balance, timing and precision. These cuts typically include downward diagonal strikes, upward diagonal returns, horizontal cuts, and vertical finishing strikes. Each cut must originate from strong hip rotation and grounded footwork, generating power through correct body mechanics rather than brute strength. Control of distance (ma-ai) is essential, as is maintaining the correct cutting line and blade angle throughout. Breathing is coordinated with each movement, reinforcing rhythm and stability. The transitions between cuts are smooth and fluid, demonstrating confidence and mastery rather than haste. At 2nd Dan level, examiners look for sharp technique combined with calm authority. This kata embodies the spirit of traditional Japanese weapon training within Seishin Ju-Jitsu — discipline, respect, precision and controlled power — hallmarks of a true black belt practitioner.
