GA starts 3 key projects in India General Atomics, a major American energy and defence corporation, has started three significant projects in India in the field of artificial intelligence, drones and semiconductors. The announcement came a day after the launch of a landmark India-US initiative on critical and emerging technologies iCET. MQ-9B Sea/Sky Guardian On 3rd January, it was reported that General Atomics Announces Strategic Partnership with Bharat Forge to Manufacture Aerostructures. GA & BFL will manufacture main landing gear components, sub-assemblies, and assemblies of remotely piloted aircraft. The negotiations for the local assembly of the MQ9B Sea/Sky Guardian Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) has been going on between Indian and US for quite few years. Navy chief has told that at least 60 % of the quantity of the aircraft proposed for procurement in India will be manufactured in India. A Tri-services case for the procurement of 30 MQ9B from the US under the Government-to-Government Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route is under process at an estimated cost of $3 Billion. AoN for the same is expected shortly. US Government has also agreed to set up a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility for the SeaGuardians in India which will serve as SeaGuardian Global Sustainment (SGSH) hub, where this system from any country could be serviced. As a part of this MQ-9 deal, India has also planned for transfer of certain niche technology to DRDO required for indigenous design & development of HALE RPAS. Partnership in Artificial Intelligence General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) has entered into a partnership in the disruptive field of Artificial Intelligence with 114ai – an Indian artificial intelligence (AI) company, to develop the next generation of technologies in artificial intelligence. Artificial Intelligence is going to be every where in defence. It is widely being used for ISR – to identify soldiers, targets and feed the information back to command-and-control centre. AI is also being used to take various decisions such as what action to take when a threat is detected. Partnership in semiconductor manufacturing On, 27th September 2022, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) announced a strategic partnership with Indian start-up company 3rdiTech, a company that develops next generation computer chips, integrated circuits, and other semiconductor technologies. The start-up is one of the inaugural winners of the Indian Ministry of Defence’s flagship iDEX Program. In the spirit of increasing technology cooperation between India and the U.S., the companies will now work to co-develop state of the art products for the Indian and global market. GA-ASI has been working closely with the team at 3rdiTech since 2021. This announcement comes as the two companies are beginning to co-design and co-develop products. This represents a large shift from today’s landscape that is dominated by Technology Transfer from U.S. to Indian companies. A task force set up by the US Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) in partnership with the India Electronics Semiconductor Association (IESA) with participation from the Government of India Semiconductor Mission. The objective is to develop a “readiness assessment” to identify near-term industry opportunities and facilitate the longer-term strategic development of complementary semiconductor ecosystems. This task force will make recommendations to the Department of Commerce and the India Semiconductor Mission on opportunities and challenges to overcome, in order to further strengthen India’s role within the global semiconductor value chain and will also provide input to the US-India Commercial Dialogue. The task force will also identify and facilitate workforce development and R&D.
