Keep anything flammable at least three feet from all heating equipment such as a furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater. 2. Keep a three foot "kid free zone" around all open flames and space heaters. 3. Never use the oven to heat your home. 4. Have a qualified professional clean the chimney and inspect the heating equipment once a year. 5. Have a qualified professional inspect the heating equipment once a year. 6. Have a qualified professional install all heating equipment except personal heaters. 7. Be sure to turn off all portable heaters prior to leaving the room. 8. Always have a protective screen to prevent embers and sparks from getting into the house. 9. Always put the cold ashes in a metal trash can and then dispose them.
