So, we recently got an unexpected new Yu-Gi-Oh banlist update the other day that banned a handful of problematic cards in the format right now. I don’t think it’s an understatement to say that all of these cards are pretty welcome bans in most competitive players’ eyes. They’ve all been pretty relevant cards on and off in the game for the last few years and so most people won’t be sad to see them go, myself included. That said, if you look through comments online or maybe even from some of your own local players, there are some dissenting players who actually disagree with these bans. And one of the reasons I’ve seen mentioned the most is that they claim these cards were good options that actually kept the powerful meta decks in check. In their estimation, something like Dimensional Barrier, for instance, was a strong card you could use to counter a powerful deck like Mitsurugi, Ryzeal, Yummy, or Dracotail that had a primary summoning mechanic. Or maybe they liked using cards like Fossil Dyna and the Barrier Statue in a dedicated stun deck meant to shut down the opposition. So in that context, a lot of these cards getting banned is a huge blow. And it actually follows the recent banning and limiting of several other floodgate cards over the last couple years. Skill Drain, Summon Limit, Gozen Match, Rivalry of Warlords, There Can Be Only One, Anti-Spell Fragrance, and so on. To be clear, I’m pretty happy to see a lot of these cards go. But even though I don’t entirely agree with the sentiment, I’m a pretty firm believer that everyone is entitled to their opinions about the balance of the game, the decks, the cards in them. And I’d even go as far as to say I think the “stun deck” as a category has the right to exist in Yu-Gi-Oh… sort of. It’s complicated, but we’ll get there, just stick with me. So instead of just making another reactionary banlist video, I wanted to dig a bit deeper and talk about all of these so-called “stun” cards as a whole, their history, their place in Yu-Gi-Oh, and how it’s evolved over the years to get where they are today. 2nd Channel ▸ / @apsamplifier Merch ▸ https://team-aps.creator-spring.com Buy Any TCG Cards! ▸ partner.tcgplayer.com/vPPJJA Facebook ▸ / teamaps Twitter ▸ / teamaps Instagram ▸ / teamxaps Tiktok ▸ / teamxaps Discord ▸ / discord Become a channel member! ▸ / @teamaps Video Equipment ▸ https://brandstore.rode.com?sca_ref=6... #YuGiOh #VideoEssay #Retrospective
