Interstate 26 (known by Charlestonians as "The Interstate") connects downtown Charleston and the Cooper River Bridge with North Charleston and points north & west. Interstate 26 runs generally northwest-to-southeast across South Carolina, connecting the Upstate region with the state capital of Columbia and the Lowcountry region at Charleston. Across western North Carolina, Interstate 26 runs mainly north-south between Upstate South Carolina, the city of Asheville, and eastern Tennessee along the southern Blue Ridge. In far eastern Tennessee, Interstate 26 connects western North Carolina and the cities of Johnson City and Kingsport with the Interstate 81 corridor.
