Today we’re breaking down a cutting-edge development from RTX BBN Technologies, which has received a contract award from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under the X-ray Extreme-range Non-imaging Analysis program — known as XENA. Announced on February 25, 2026, this effort focuses on developing advanced algorithms capable of reconstructing the hidden geometry and internal features of man-made objects from distances approaching one kilometer. Unlike traditional close-range X-ray systems, this research tackles extreme standoff distances where signals are weak, noisy, and heavily distorted. Instead of relying on high-resolution imagery, BBN is designing sophisticated computational models that can turn a handful of grainy, low-photon snapshots into actionable structural insight. Key focus areas: • Kilometer-range X-ray signal reconstruction • Low-photon, high-noise data processing • Multi-view probabilistic modeling • Geometry inference from incomplete inputs • Simulation-driven algorithm training The goal is enhanced situational awareness in environments where approaching a target may be unsafe or impractical. The project is being developed in collaboration with institutions including the Georgia Institute of Technology. If successful, this DARPA-backed initiative could redefine long-range sensing by combining physics-based modeling with advanced computational imaging. What do you think — will extreme-range X-ray analysis become a game-changer for future sensing technologies? Disclaimer This video is for educational and informational purposes only.
