In this instructional video, artist Kellen shares the classic “Velatura effect” and how it can be adapted into your own work. Velatura is a technique used to blend layers of paint to construct realistic clouds, creating the perspective of them being both transparent and embedded in a painting. The Velatura effect can be seen in Renaissance paintings, including masterpieces by Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci. Kellen uses different colors (darker tones to lighter) to create a final cloud effect that is both realistic and translucent. The technique can be used on a variety of canvasses and with a variety of color palettes.
